RESOURCES FOR TEACHING SIX TRAIT WRITING

bullet6 + 1 Traits of Writing is an excellent resource by Ruth Culham for grades 3 and up that is full of activities, ideas, and tips for the teacher.
bullet6 + 1 Traits of Writing: The Complete Guide for the Primary Grades is similar to the one above, but it is for the primary grades.  It is also by Ruth Culham.
bulletUsing the Six Trait Writing Model is a resource for intermediate grades, but works well for middle school as well.  It contains activities and reproducibles.
bulletI don't have Creating Young Writers: Using the Six Traits to Enrich the Writing Process in Primary Classrooms, but it's by Vicki Spandel, so I know it is a good one.  It's for grades K-3, and is full of ideas and samples.
bulletBooks, Lessons, Ideas for Teaching the Six Traits: Writing in the Elementary and Middle Grades is another book by Vicki Spandel.  It is for elementary and middle school levels. It gives lessons and ideas for specific books appropriate for each trait. I do not have this one, but I do have one like it for middle and high school levels.
bulletBooks, Lessons, Ideas for Teaching the Six Traits: Writing at Middle and High School is one of my favorite resources.  It has helped me collect books to use as examples of each trait.
bulletPicture Books: An Annotated Bibliography for Teaching Writing is an excellent resource from Ruth Culham full of ideas for using specific picture books to emphasize each trait.  It is great for developing mini-lessons.  It is another one of my favorites.
bulletUsing Picture Books to Teach Writing with the Traits is another resource full of ideas for using specific picture books for the traits.  If you teach middle school, or even high school, do not let picture books scare you off.  They work great for mini-lessons!
bullet40 Reproducible Forms for the Writing Traits Classroom is a resource by Ruth Culham full of resources to help you teach and assess the traits.
bulletCreating Writers Through 6-Trait Writing Assessment and Instruction is another resource by Vicki Spandel.  I do not have this one, but I am planning on ordering it.
bulletI don't have Traits of Writing Flip Chart, but it looks very interesting.  It has oversize pages with large print.
