GUIDELINES FOR PARAGRAPHING

TOPIC SENTENCE

    A good topic sentence must do the following:

bullet

Provide one relevant idea about the topic of the paper

bullet

State something specific about the topic of the paper.

bullet

Introduce the main idea of the paragraph.

bullet

Give the reader an idea of what the rest of the paragraph will cover.

bullet

Appear somewhere at the beginning of the paragraph.   (The top sentence can appear elsewhere, but this sometimes causes confusion for both the writer and the reader.)

SUPPORTING DETAILS

    The supporting details in a paragraph must do the following:

bullet

Be relevant to the main idea of the paragraph.

bullet

Give specific details, facts, or examples to support, prove, or explain the main idea of the paragraph.

bullet

Be as descriptive and interesting as possible.

bullet

Explain or define any terms the reader may not know.

CLOSING SENTENCE

    A good closing sentence must do the following:

bullet

Restate the main idea of the paragraph using different words.

bullet

Remind the reader of the writer's feeling about the topic.

bullet

Appear at the end of the paragraph.
